Word Wizards

Join Naomi, the Growlife Speech Pathologist, to make some magic with sounds and words!

Designed for students in Prep - Grade 2, Word Wizards is based on the Sounds-Write phonics approach to reading and spelling.

Choose the group that's best for you - initial code (beginner readers) or extended code (more confident readers and spellers) for a weekly 45-minute session after school on Wednesdays at Highgate Hill. No more than 6 students in a group means plenty of individual support and opportunity to build social connections with other literacy learners.

Learning objectives

Growlife Word Wizards will build skills in recognising and manipulating sounds in words.

Using these foundation skills students will be able to:

• break down words into their component sounds to read them.
• use their knowledge of phonics to spell words.
• choose and read books independently with increasing confidence and enjoyment.
• apply their phonics skills to other literacy activities, such as writing, comprehension, and vocabulary development.

General information on Word Wizards:

• New literacy groups will be starting at Growlife Highgate Hill and Sinnamon Park locations in Term 2. Join Naomi, the Growlife Speech Pathologist, for weekly 45min sessions after school.

Choose the most appropriate group based on description and year level.

Initial code

• beginner readers
• introduces the concepts and skills needed for breaking words into sounds and how to match them to letters (phonemic awareness)
• taught in Prep

Extended code

• introduces additional spellings and sounds, words with multiple syllables
• taught in Years 1 and 2

To enrol in this course, students should have:

• a solid foundation of phonemic awareness skills (breaking words into sounds, adding and deleting sounds)
• be confident writing simple words eg. Dad, pat, dog, hen

Locations: Highgate Hill and Sinnamon Park

Days : Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Times: 3.30pm - 4.15pm (initial code), 4.30pm - 5.15pm (extended code)

Cost:$45 per session including GST, paid per term (No private health rebates)
