Senior Health Assessments

Comprehensive care for Brisbane seniors

If you are aged 75 year or older, your General Practitioner has likely recommended you book a senior health assessment. Growlife Medical encourages these assessments and has the facilities and expertise to conduct comprehensive health assessments for older people at all Growlife Medical Centres within Brisbane.

Why Is A Senior Health Assessment Important?

General Practitioners recommend the Senior Health Assessment, so a broader baseline of your overall physical, mental and social health is established. The goal is to keep you healthy, independent, and make sure you are prepared for the future.

Health assessments for people aged 75 years and older were originally introduced by the Commonwealth Government in 1999 to fund a comprehensive annual checkup, to understand what kind of further assistance or care older people may require.

Depending on the outcome of the health assessment, your doctor might provide recommendations and refer you to other health care professionals as required. For most, your doctor may simply discuss the findings, and be satisfied with the current care being provided to you.

Having a health assessment completed allows for timely treatment if any new health conditions that may arise. We aim to catch things early that might not have been investigated if a senior health assessment was not done. 75+ Health Assessments help you receive the most  comprehensive care.

What Is An Over 75 Health Assessment?

Think of this as your comprehensive annual checkup to detect any new health issues. During the assessment, a nurse, and then a doctor will ask you questions about your current health, your past medical history, immunisations, your medications, allergies, your social history and your daily activities/diet. The doctor will also conduct a full physical examination, including recording your height and weight, to ensure they get a complete snapshot of your overall health.

It’s not just about physical health. As those over 75 are at higher risk of neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease, a seniors mental health assessment is conducted along with cognitive testing. We also administer a questionnaire designed to check for depression.

Because issues with memory or sudden health events often arise, we will also discuss with you wether you have created an Advanced Health Directive or appointed an Enduring Power of Attorney. Both of these documents are important for making your wishes clear, and everyone should consider appointing an Enduring Power of Attorney. Doing so now can mean a lot less stress should an unexpected health event or hospitalisation occur.

The overall check usually takes about 60 minutes. If you wish, a carer or a friend can also be present during the assessment. If you are worried about your memory, having a family member present is a particularly good idea.

Of course advice and appropriate interventions will be recommended. We will provide you with a copy of the assessment, including a list of recommendations for you to consider. Often, a blood test or scan might be recommended. You doctor will then make a followup plan to see you and continue your care over the next 12 months.

An over 75 health assessment is available annually, and is a great opportunity to have a review of your health.
